Throughout this week, a new trend took over social media. People started uploading pictures to AI and asking, “What would I look like if I lived in the 1980s?”
For many of you, the 80s are not AI, you actually lived them! You have the pictures, the hairstyles, the clothes, and probably a few memories you would rather keep hidden. But for a younger generation, it became fascinating to imagine themselves living forty years ago.
There is something attractive about looking back. The past can feel familiar and safe because we already know how the story turned out. But I really liked something Odailson Fonseca, a Christian author, wrote about this trend: “The past is a rearview mirror, not a steering wheel.” The past can remind us where we came from, but it cannot determine where God is taking us.
The Bible says: “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!” Isaiah 43:18–19
Christian faith is always pointing forward. We appreciate the memories. We thank God for what He has done. We learn from yesterday. But our greatest days are not behind us, because our greatest hope is still ahead of us.
So enjoy the old pictures. Laugh at the hairstyles. Remember the good times. But don’t live looking only through the rearview mirror.
For those waiting for Jesus, the best is not in the past, but the best is still to come. And every day that passes is one day closer to eternity.
Happy Sabbath
